Privacy and Security by Mind Map: Privacy and Security

1. Privacy

1.1. As the dictionary presents privacy is "the state of being free from unwanted or undue intrusion or disturbance in one's private life or affairs; freedom to be let alone." (Dictionary, 2018)

1.2. It has been said that anything posted on the internet stays there forever. Privacy has become a serious issue in modern society because people share information, that may think is not important details but becomes bait for hackers. Social media has become hacker playgrounds because a simple photo of a drink that shows the surroundings on the restaurant or the area can show hackers you are not home or a photo of the beach on Facebook which then has comments saying have a nice trip can also be bait.

1.3. In an article several people were asked the several questions on how they view privacy it was based on the different age, race, gender, education background and the use of social media and it shows that everyone is concern in different ways. The question "How do you think your definition of privacy differs from people who are younger than you are?" (Pew Research Centre, 2014) , James aged 51 mixed with some education and a social media user says "Social networking has decreased younger folks’ sensitivity to privacy issues. Lots of things are shared."(Pew Research Centre, 2014) or the question "As you go through a regular day, how much do you think about the ways in which your movements and actions can be tracked?" (Pew Research Centre, 2014), Julie aged 23 white some education with use of social media says"Don't really think about it openly, just keeping it in the back of your mind always". (Pew Research Centre) The data collects shows a difference on how people view privacy and at different stages in life.

1.4. Although the Pew Research Centre shows opinions of adults in the United States, lets take a look at Canadians on how they feel about online surveillance. The article shows in 3 different categories on peoples concern. Government surveillance shows that "One half (49 per cent) of Canadians find it ‘completely unacceptable’ for ‘governments to monitor everyone’s email and other online activities’, while 51 per cent say it is either ‘acceptable in some circumstances’ (47 per cent) or ‘completely acceptable’ (4 per cent)."(CIRA, 2013) as well Online confidentiality presents "Only two in 10 (18 per cent) Canadians believe that their Internet activity is confidential, while (61 per cent) don’t believe it is. Twenty per cent don’t know." (CIRA, 2013) and finally the value of privacy online shows "Fifty-nine per cent ‘would prefer that the Government not review their Internet usage, but they believe it is acceptable if they have a good reason for doing so."(CIRA, 2013) With the given statistics Canadian's are in the middle, as some believe it is okay to be tracked and some not but I believe it is a form of trying to keep safe on the net from the simple hacker to terrorist around the world or in our own backyard.

2. Compliment of each other

2.1. It has been said that privacy and security go together because without one another the word safety would not be used. Privacy and security are partners due to the fact that if people would be mindful of what they post on social media or using secured internet connections or simply giving sensitive information out, we would not need the extensive security that we now need. In my opinion years ago people were not as care free to sign up for apps or be easy targets with passwords as they were thinking of complex and meaningful ones . In todays society it is all about the easiness and what the simple things people want to remember.

3. Security

3.1. As the dictionary states security is "precautions taken to guard against crime, attack, sabotage, espionage, etc." (, 2018)

3.2. In our society many, may think security is an anti-virus software, but security has grown to be something much larger. Security on the internet has become the most crucial aspect as there are some who deliberately invade ones internet privacy. Hackers as they are called try to get hold of crucial information about individuals as the article states "more than 58% of consumers have shared details over social media that put them at risk for fraud and identity theft". (Fischer, 2013) This being said internet security has become more of importance to some who have fallen as a victim or have the potential to become a victim of internet crimes. The anti-virus software company McAfee has presented an article that give 15 tips on how to stay secured when using the internet, for example "Be sure no one watches when you enter your password, Make sure you use different passwords for each of your accounts..." (McAfee, 2011) These tips can be of use when signing up for apps, bank accounts or even simply signing into your computer/smartphone, our society need to have a better understanding of security when using the web and to educate themselves on how to avoid security breaches on the web.

5. As we explore the two topics on how they complement each other and the differences on how it affects our modern world.

6. Difference

6.1. Privacy and security are different as privacy is securing sensitive information and security making sure that sensitive information is not exposed. They are not very different as they both help and guide society when making right and wrong decisions on the internet.

7. Creative Aspect

7.1. I choose to do a mind map again as it shows a neat layout of ideas. As well it reminds me of a ven diagram when I was growing up which always helped me bring my ideas together but as well create something fun nd different.

8. Conclusion

8.1. To conclude, I believe that privacy and security needs to be more of an important issue especially when using the internet as future generations need to be educated and have an understanding of sensitive information in order to not be a victim of internet crimes.
