4. Abstract

4.1. An increasingly digital world requires sophisticated approaches to help people understand and cope with profound change. Humanities provide the environment where this process occurs. Traditional approaches to humanities research drew upon theoretical research. A theory is testable sets of related concepts that explain predict patterns of behavior. A robust theory must withstand the introduction of new data and must be applicable in new contexts. Many of the theories that once worked in the humanities have lost their explanatory and predictive power in a rapidly emerging digital context. Classic grounded theory method was designed to discover theories in emerging areas.

5. Proposal for Canadian Society for Digital Humanities workshop

5.1. This session introduces Classic Grounded Theory Method (CGTM)which is a systematic analysis of patterns in all kinds of data intended to discover theories and high impact dependent variables suitable for testing with qualitative or quantitative methods. It is specifically designed for highly emergent fields where extant theories are lacking or inadequate. The emerging field of Digital Humanities could benefit from a skilled application of CGTM, another powerful tool in the DH researchers kit providing a theoretical foothold for action. Attendees at this workshop would get a broad introduction to CGTM, learn what distinguishes Classic Grounded Theory Method from other methods, and get information on training and CGTM communities of practice. Specifically, the CGTM concept of "all is data" and the notions of "fit", "grab", "modifiability", and "generalizability", as they relate to the validity of theories generated, will be discussed. An overview of the CGTM processes of data collection, constant comparative analysis, memoing, theoretical sorting, and theory write up will be provided.

6. Proposal for a Poster presentation to the IACGT conference.

6.1. Digital Humanities is gathering strength as an area of academic interest with new university programs regularly introduced at institutions around the world. Old theories are being tested with the introduction of new data in new contexts. Many existing theories have been adapted and a few new theories have emerged. Classic Grounded Theory method is designed for emergent areas and would be particularly suited to the task of building a body of theory in this new discipline.

6.1.1. Data is being collected and analyzed but no specific theory is proposed at this point. Rather this presentation makes an argument and begins a dialogue around the idea that CGTM should be promoted and recommended for researchers working in Digital Humanities.
